IEEE launches six-book engineering series for children

The collection for ages 8–12 explores AI, electric vehicles, semiconductors, ocean engineering and communication technology through hands-on challenges.

IEEE announced a new educational children’s book series: Tomorrow’s Technology with TryEngineering, Powered by IEEE.

Created through IEEE’s TryEngineering initiative in partnership with Lerner Publishing Group, the six‑book collection for ages 8 through 12 turns big engineering ideas into hands‑on discovery. Each book blends real‑world technology with interactive design challenges that spark curiosity, build confidence, and help kids understand how the world works—and how they can shape what comes next.

For more than two decades, IEEE has worked to expand access to STEM education and inspire future engineers, researchers, and technology leaders. As STEM careers now account for nearly one in four U.S. jobs, according to the National Science Foundation, the new book series offers an accessible way to turn early curiosity into lasting confidence and a strong foundation for the future.

The series is based on ebooks and videos available at tryengineering.org and incorporates insights from the IEEE Communications, Computer, and Oceanic Engineering Societies, as well as the IEEE Transportation Electrification Council.

For kids who ask why—and want to try it themselves

Designed to build foundational STEM literacy, the series makes engineering approachable through step‑by‑step explanations, familiar real‑world examples, and hands-on design challenges that encourage active problem‑solving. By linking big ideas to everyday technologies and highlighting diverse engineering careers, the books help upper‑elementary and middle school students see how core STEM concepts shape the world around them.

The collection debuts with six core titles that offer young readers a hands-on look at the breakthrough technologies driving modern engineering:

  • Artificial Intelligence: The Future of Smart Technology – Explores the AI systems powering streaming services, search engines, and healthcare, showing how learning models work alongside key ethical considerations like privacy and bias.
  • Communication Technology: From Morse Code to Smartphones – Traces the evolution of human communication from smoke signals to wireless networks and 6G innovations.
  • Electric Vehicles: Powering the Future of Transportation – Demonstrates how electric cars, trains, and scooters work to reduce air pollution and transform clean transportation.
  • Ocean Engineering: Protecting Our Ocean Environments – Highlights the vital role marine technology plays in exploring, understanding, and safeguarding essential ocean ecosystems.
  • Semiconductors: The Building Blocks of Modern Electronics – Introduces the microchip technology behind everyday digital devices and explains how semiconductor materials function.
  • Signal Power: The Hidden Waves Behind Modern Tech – Uncovers the science of signal processing and how engineers analyze waves to keep phone calls, medical monitors, and networks running smoothly.
