Synopsys and OpenAI partner on semiconductor design AI

GPT-Synopsys will support EDA workflows, including PPA optimization, timing closure and verification on customer data.

Synopsys and OpenAI announced a strategic partnership combining OpenAI’s AI models with Synopsys’ electronic design automation (EDA) tools and agentic AI technologies. Under a multiyear agreement, the companies will jointly develop GPT-Synopsys, a specialized model designed to use Synopsys EDA tools for semiconductor design workflows. The agreement also includes a revenue-sharing arrangement and a joint go-to-market effort to offer GPT-Synopsys to customers worldwide.

Agentic AI systems currently connect general-purpose models with EDA tools to support chip design workflows. Under the partnership, GPT-Synopsys will be developed to use EDA tools, interpret their outputs and iteratively adjust designs. The companies say this approach will allow engineers to evaluate more design options and optimize power, performance and area (PPA).

GPT-Synopsys targets AI-supported chip design

GPT-Synopsys will combine OpenAI models with Synopsys EDA technology and semiconductor design expertise. The model is intended to support chip design and verification tasks and operate Synopsys tools directly. Engineers will be able to specify objectives such as PPA optimization, timing closure and verification closure, while agents run tools, interpret results, make changes and repeat the process for engineer review.

GPT-Synopsys will run on OpenAI-hosted infrastructure and is designed to work with customer agent harness systems. It will also be integrated with Synopsys.ai and the Synopsys Autopilot agentic AI platform. The companies said early technology engagements are underway with semiconductor customers.

The joint service will combine computing resources, the model and software licenses while protecting customer-specific design data. GPT-Synopsys will include security, governance and access controls for enterprise use. Customer data will not be used to train the model and will be encrypted at rest and in transit. Customers will be able to manage data retention, auditing and permissions through configurable controls.
