Siemens and KION partner to digitalize intralogistics

Collaboration leverages the new Digital Twin Composer software to simulate warehouse layouts and improve end-to-end process resilience.

Siemens and KION have entered a strategic partnership to digitalize intralogistics processes using AI, automation and simulation. The collaboration aims to improve predictability and flexibility in warehouse operations by capturing data from on-site cameras and sensors for analysis.

This data is used to create digital twins of machines and entire warehouses to simulate end-to-end processes. These simulations allow logistics companies to virtually test how warehouse layout changes affect throughput. As part of this agreement, KION will be the first company in Europe to use Siemens’ new Digital Twin Composer software. This tool enables the simultaneous simulation of multiple processes in real time.

Introduced at CES in January, Digital Twin Composer is a modular toolkit for creating AI-supported digital twins of production facilities and logistics systems. It allows users to optimize production and facilities using industrial AI and real-time physical information. Throughout the lifecycle of a facility, the software provides a 3D environment to simulate and monitor product and production data.

KION manages the planning and operation of its logistics solutions through its own software environment centered on Siemens’ Teamcenter PLM software. By using digital twins, KION can simulate warehouse processes during the early stages of planning to support data-driven decisions before implementation.

The two companies have also agreed to share industrial data to accelerate the deployment of AI-enabled solutions. KION provides operational data and domain expertise from warehouse environments, which supports Siemens’ development of an Industrial Foundation Model to scale AI benefits across industrial domains.
