Siemens partners with Skeleton on data center power systems

Supercapacitors manage millisecond-scale load changes and support AC retrofits, with a potential path to 800 V DC architectures.

Siemens is expanding its data center portfolio through an investment in and exclusive partnership with Skeleton Technologies. Skeleton develops and manufactures high-power energy storage systems, including supercapacitors for managing transient power spikes and peak shaving. Siemens has worked with Skeleton as a technology partner since 2022 and has invested in the company since 2023.

The offering is designed to address rapid changes in data center electricity demand. AI workloads can cause the power demand of thousands of chips to rise or fall within milliseconds, creating megawatt-scale changes over a few seconds.

Skeleton’s supercapacitors absorb these short-duration power fluctuations to help protect data center equipment and reduce disturbances at the grid connection. The system is intended for hyperscale data centers and AI factories, supporting higher-density AI deployments and helping operators add capacity without fully redesigning existing facilities.

The solution can be deployed in existing AC architectures and retrofit projects, with a potential path toward future 800 V DC systems.

The transactions will be completed after customary closing conditions are met.
