NTT DOCOMO BUSINESS, Inc. and stc group, a digital services provider in Saudi Arabia, announced the launch of an IoT connectivity solution¹ for Komatsu Ltd. (Komatsu) construction equipment in Saudi Arabia, which has specific telecommunications regulations².
Komatsu construction equipment operates at sites across Saudi Arabia. The company uses Komtrax³, a telematics and remote monitoring system that wirelessly collects operational data from its equipment. The system supports remote monitoring, data analysis and predictive maintenance by providing information about equipment use and condition.
To support the expansion of Komatsu’s connected services, NTT DOCOMO BUSINESS partnered with stc group to provide IoT connectivity within Saudi Arabia in accordance with local telecommunications regulations.
NTT DOCOMO BUSINESS was responsible for solution design and end-to-end delivery. stc group provided local telecommunications expertise, connectivity services and technology, including SIM cards and a Connectivity Management Platform⁴ (CMP), for deployment across Saudi Arabia.
Overview of the IoT connectivity solution
In Saudi Arabia, the solution provides three main capabilities:
a. Connectivity services aligned with local regulations
NTT DOCOMO BUSINESS establishes the contractual and operational framework required to address local telecommunications regulations. stc group provides in-country connectivity services under that framework.
b. Connectivity using the stc group network and CMP
The solution uses the stc group network and CMP to provide connectivity for Komatsu construction equipment. The system supports the collection and management of telemetry data across the service area.
c. Support from design through operation
NTT DOCOMO BUSINESS provides support from solution design through implementation and operation. This enables Komatsu to address country-specific telecommunications requirements while limiting changes to its existing connectivity model.
Expanding IoT connectivity services
NTT DOCOMO BUSINESS will continue to work with global IoT service providers and local telecommunications operators to provide IoT connectivity solutions that address telecommunications regulations and connectivity requirements in different countries and regions.
NTT DOCOMO BUSINESS is also developing its platform capabilities under its “AI-Centric ICT Platform⁵” vision to support IoT applications. As part of this work, the company is expanding its service platform through the global-ready “Pro” plan of docomo business SIGN⁶, a Network as a Service (NaaS) solution for IoT.
NTT DOCOMO BUSINESS plans to support the international expansion of companies that provide IoT devices and digital services, including construction equipment and automotive manufacturers.
