Emerson releases QX1400 for certified hazardous locations

The analyzer uses hybrid laser and paramagnetic sensing to measure key process gases with low-maintenance operation.

Emerson has announced the Rosemount QX1400 Continuous Gas Analyzer for natural gas quality monitoring, continuous emissions monitoring systems (CEMS), and other industrial applications. The Rosemount QX1400 uses the same hybrid laser-based and paramagnetic measurement technologies as the Rosemount QX1000 Continuous Gas Analyzer, with certifications for installation in hazardous areas. In Europe, these include ATEX II 2G Ex d IIB H2 T4, and for international markets, IECEx Ex db IIB+H2 T4 Gb. North American certification for Class 1, Division 2, Groups B, C, D, T4 is expected by the end of 2026.

The analyzer uses paramagnetic detection for O₂ and quantum cascade laser direct absorption spectroscopy for other target gases. Oxygen measurement is required in liquefied natural gas (LNG), carbon capture and underground storage (CCUS), ethylene purity, hydrogen purity, and various chemical and petrochemical operations located in classified areas. The modular combination of these two measurement technologies allows the system to be configured for specific gas streams.

These certifications permit installation in designated hazardous locations without secondary explosion-proof or purged enclosures. This design reduces system complexity during installation. In suitable applications, locating the analyzer closer to the sample tap shortens sample lines and reduces sample transport delay. Facilities that typically require hazardous-area gas analysis include CEMS installations, LNG plants, and chemical and petrochemical processing sites.

The laser-based measurement provides gas selectivity for continuous monitoring of multi-component sample streams. Standard configurations measure from one to four gases among CO, CO₂, O₂, NO, NO₂, and SO₂, with optional configurations available for gases including CH₄ and N₂O.

The Rosemount QX1400 adds hazardous-area certification and multicomponent analysis options to Emerson’s QX gas analyzer line.
