Niel
The portal and cantilever method of structural analysis both require that a number of approximations or assumptions be made. They are not design to be exact since they require simplifications of the real world situation. For more information you may want to refer to the Google search [1] below.

As part of that search I found a nice online lesson [2]. It goes into the details of both methods and how they are different.
