What's the biggest differences between a Manufacturing Engineer and a Mechanical Engineer?
I am currently in school for Manufacturing Engineer, but am thinking of switching to Mechanical Engineering because of my background. I have been a automovtive dealership technician for 10 years and would like to put what I have already learned into Engineering.
Mechanical Engineers focus on the design and analysis of mechanical systems.
Manufacturing Engineers focus on applying engineering principles to the development and implementation of manufacturing processes.
There is a lot of overlap in the two disciplines. The Manufacturing Engineer will need to learn a lot more about automated processes and electronics than a Mechanical Engineer. The Mechanical Engineer with learn a lot more about thermodynamics and the specific requirements for analyzing mechanisms.
I got my degree as a Mechanical Engineer and have migrated more to being a Manufacturing Engineer focusing on the manufacture of mechanical systems as compared to electronic and electrical systems.
