What roles do chemical engineers play in a thermal power plant

A friend with a chemical engineering background (first degree) has an offer to work in a thermal power plant as a trainee engineer. He wants to know if he can practice chemical engineering in a power plant without really deviating from his chosen field. He also wants to know possible areas of specialization, in the event that he decides to enroll for a graduate degree to further his career in the power generation industry. Being in the Oil and Gas industry myself, i could not offer much help.

When you are talking about thermal power plants could you be more specific? You mention you are involved in the oil and gas industry. I would characterized those as being thermal power plants.

Alternately are you asking about geothermal power plants?

Where is the plant located? Do you have the facility name?

Niel

It’s a Thermal Power Plant called Egbin, located in Lagos(Nigeria) and it operates on steam turbines

William:

If the steam for the turbines is generated using coal, oil or gas your friend’s Chemical Engineering back ground with come in use as he get involved with issues on the combustion side of the boiler and how to properly deal with the products of combustion. There is a lot of work being done in this area including developing methods to scrub contaminates from the exhaust stream and sequestering the Carbon Dioxide.
