what is specific gravity
Jacob:
Specific gravity is the density of a object when compared to the density of water. The specific gravity of water is defined as one.
An object or material that has a specific gravity of 2 weighs twice as much as the same volume of water.
An object or material that has a specific gravity of 0.8 will weigh only 80% as much as the same volume of water.
Materials and objects that have specific gravities less than one float. Those with higher specific gravities sink.
Knowing the specific gravity of an object makes it very easy to calculate its density, especially when the metric system is used. Water as a density of one gram per cubic centimeter (1g/cc).
