Awaiting your help

The difference in the configuration of a horizontal [1] and a vertical [2] steam trap is the orientation direction for the flow in and out of the trap as noted in the two references provided.
Base on this difference they really can not be used interchangeably, but would be a straight for process to redesign or configure the piping system so that either one could be used.

What type of steam trap are you using?
Orientation affects some steam traps more than others. For e.g. mechanical steam traps MUST be installed in the proper orientation because they depend on buoyancy and gravity. On the other hand, thermodynamic and thermostatic steam traps offer more leeway.
The webpage used in my source explains it well.
