US Census Bureau Releases State-of-Manufacturing Infographic

Statistics from 2014 Annual Survey of Manufacturers show gains in revenue but lower employment over time.

In an election year, it’s no surprise that everyone is talking about US manufacturing. The consensus appears to be that we should expect things to get worse before they get better, but much of the speculation (especially from the candidates) seems divorced from actual data.

Fortunately, the US Census Bureau has provided some hard numbers on US manufacturing in the form of an infographic. The broad strokes are that revenue is up and employment is down. Additionally, a domestic map illustrates manufacturing employment in each state and information on which sectors showed the largest changes in revenue and employment from 2013 to 2014.
