Turn an iPod into an iPhone

FreedomPop, a US based reseller of Clearwires Wimax service, started shipping a $99 sleeve for the Apple iPod in August that basically extends the devices capability to support Wimax. The company claims in its press release that “By leveraging a VoIP app such as Skype, the iPod touch essentially becomes a carrier-free option that allows consumers to enjoy an iPhone-like experience without signing contracts or paying monthly fees.” The sleeve sells for $99 USD and claims to offer speeds “…up to 10x 3G speeds currently available on the iPhone 4/4S”. The device can also act as a mobile hotspot for up to 7 other devices. The bad news – it’s only available in the US where FreedomPop service extends.
