TraceParts Inc., a leading provider of 3D engineering content, announced yesterday that it has launched a new 3D community that will aim to connect CAD users and suppliers. The community, which will be called 3D Exchange (3DX), will also be a platform on which community members can display their work and solicit feedback. The company is already a reputable source for downloadable supplier CAD models and standard parts.
To attract new users, the company is offering certain social currencies, ranging from merit badges awarded to those who create and maintain interest-based groups to logos reflecting a member’s expertise in a specific CAD program. 3DX will also host regular challenges, called 3DX Model Showdowns, and winners will receive Amazon.com gift certificates of up to $100.
The current members of 3DX are mostly fervent users of specific CAD systems, such as groups for PTC Creo, AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, and SolidWorks. In addition the community also includes special interest groups, such as 3D Printing, 3D Hackers, and the Star Trek Modeling Group.
