Touchscreen CNC System Invites Interactions

3D machine simulator aims to make CNC systems easier to use.

Touchscreen interfaces are the new way to do things, even when it comes to computer-aided manufacturing (CAM).

A computerized numerical control (CNC) system based on touchscreen technology has been announced as a joint effort between ModuleWorks, a supplier of CAD/CAM components for five-axis machining and CNC simulation, and Power Automation, a manufacturer of PC-based CNC and Soft-CNC systems.

The PA9000 Smart Touch Panel-NC system is the most recent edition of Power Automation’s signature PC-based CNC systems. As with most CNC systems, it is designed to ensure that parts of its connected machines won’t collide or crash.

To do this, the PA9000 generates a kinematic simulation of the machine in a 3D, real-time environment. It features a capacity for fast-forward simulation of the manufacturing process and aims to keep things in line with real-time collision avoidance and preventative stops.

The real difference with this system is its interactive nature.

The PA9000 is intended as an easy-to-use, intuitive solution for CNC systems. ModuleWorks and Power Automation decided to accomplish this through the incorporation of a touchscreen as the PA9000’s control panel.

The 21.5” screen, in addition to enabling easier use of the CNC system, is equipped with multi-touch gesturing and high definition (HD) capabilities.

The system itself is designed for five-axis machining. While the use of five axes enables machining of more complex parts, it also makes the prevention of potentially expensive and wasteful crashes more difficult.

“We are delighted with this unique development of the verification and in particular the real-time collision avoidance. We can not only detect a collision but even prevent it. This geometric perspective requires computing power which only a PC-based CNC system can offer,” said Marc Hilpert, president of Power Automation.
