Baumer Light Section Sensor
Measuring object height is an important aspect of quality control applications. With the PosCon HM light-section sensor, Baumer offers a compact measuring device for this task. The pre-configured profile sensor offers five measurement modes for different measurement tasks.
An exact positioning of the measured objects is not required. The PosCon HM is designed to provide reliable measurements even on shiny and very dark surfaces. In conjunction with its measuring accuracy of up to 2 μm, it is suitable for a large number of applications in at-line, off-line and in-line control.
One example is the inspection of black rubber seals for side windows in the automobile industry. In this case, random samples are tested off-line on a special test bench. The seals are fitted into special mounts on a measuring setup. The forms and the curves of the seal may vary, but they must not exceed special limit values.
The challenge for the sensors is not only the form, or, to be more precise, the curves, but also the black, light-absorbing material. In the PosCon HM, algorithms analyze up to 600 items of height information per measurement and determine the maximum height of the object, irrespective of its position. The PosCon HM makes it possible to carry out this measurement, supplying results with a measuring rate of up to 1540 Hz.
The PosCon HM is also suitable for inspecting metallic, glossy preformed parts, such as car doors. The sensors can check the correct form of the car door, for example, by performing measurements at numerous test points. The sensors can also be mounted close beside each other without influencing each other. The PosCon HM provides the measured values directly in mm, thus allowing an immediate OK/Not OK check for each test point.

Creaform Optical Coordinate Measuring System
The MaxSHOT 3D photogrammetry cameras bring ease-of-use and accuracy to large-scale dimensional measurement projects for product development, manufacturing and quality control applications.
According to Creaform, quality control and product development specialists from the aerospace, automotive, transportation and heavy industries will benefit from the system’s live go/no-go guidance feature for their large-scale metrology projects.
Building on the first generation of MaxSHOT 3D, Creaform has developed an “intelligent” measurement solution that autonomously guides users to the right measurements within VXelements. Intended as a serious alternative to laser trackers for many applications, the new MaxSHOT 3D can be used as a standalone measurement device or in combination with Creaform’s 3D scanners and portable CMMs.
Key features include:
- 40 percent more accurate than the previous generation, with volumetric accuracy of up to 0.015 mm/m.
- Visual projections with live go/no-go feedback directly on the part, guiding the user to the correct position to take the shot.
- New light, ergonomic design engineered specifically for photogrammetric measurement of large parts ranging from 2 to 10 meters.
- Improved hardware reliability and multifunction buttons for easier interaction with the software in shop-floor conditions. § Available in Standard and Elite versions.
“Photogrammetry complexity, lack of metrology experience and the latent human error factor are no longer obstacles to high-quality measurements with the MaxSHOT 3D,” said Daniel Brown, product management director at Creaform.

Mahr Federal Wireless Depth Gage
Mahr Federal has expanded its line of wireless gaging products to include a range of depth gaging products. Digital Depth Gage MarCal 30 EWR, MarCal Specialty Caliper 16 EWR and Universal Caliper 16 EWR all provide wireless data transmission of depth probe measurements.
“Taking measurements on the shop floor and transmitting them wirelessly speeds up the quality assurance process,” said George Schuetz, director precision gages for Mahr Federal. “It also adds flexibility and a measure of safety by eliminating troublesome cables. This speeds setup and provides more efficient data processing, especially for quality control in production or incoming goods inspection.”
Mahr’s Digital Depth Gage Series, MarCal 16 EWR includes several gages designed for a variety of depth gaging tasks, including measuring groove widths and distance between grooves. All MarCal depth gage and caliper products offer IP67 resistance to dust, coolants and lubricants and high contrast digital display, locking screw, zero reset function and immediate measurement readout.
The units include steel measuring surfaces, hardened steel slide and beam construction, raised and lapped guideways for the protection of the scale and dirt wipers integrated in the slide.
Mahr’s MarCal 16 EWR Digital Caliper line includes a universal model and several specialty caliper models. All offer precise depth measurement via an integrated depth rod with measuring ranges of 0 – 6 or 8 in. (0 – 150 or 200 mm) and resolution to 0.0005 in. (0.01 mm). Specialty calipers include jaws for measuring distance between bores and grooves, and stepped workpieces.
With the touch of a button on the instrument, or keyboard, a timer, remote control, or foot switch, acquired data is sent from the gage to an i-stick radio receiver plugged into the USB port of the computer.
MarCom Pro 5.2 software is designed to enable fast and easy setup of measuring stations with wireless data transfer to the PC. Measured values from connected devices can be automatically transferred into separate Excel columns, tables, or files. At the same time, the MarCom software ensures that readings can be passed on through an integrated virtual interface box to an SPC / CAQ software such as Q-DAS or Babtec.

Thermo Fisher Scientific Metal Quality Analyzer
The Thermo Scientific Explorer 4 Analyzer with MQA software now offers improved throughput for analysis of non-metallic inclusions in steel.
The platform is a fourth-generation scanning electron microscope (SEM)/x-ray spectroscopy (EDX) for industrial manufacturing. It is faster and easier to use than its predecessors, yet still maintains its predecessors’ industry-standard accuracy and reliability.
Thermo Scientific Explorer 4 Analyzer with MQA software provides metals quality analysis, such as the size, shape, number and elemental composition of non-metallic inclusions in metals. These inclusions play a major role in determining the properties and quality of metals—too many, too few, or of the wrong composition and the product will not perform at specification.
Some inclusions can clog nozzles in the production process—leading to downtime and potential loss. The system can automatically characterize thousands of inclusions per hour to provide a statistical foundation for critical production decisions.
Thermo Scientific Explorer 4 Analyzer with MQA software is designed to maintain process control limits across multiple sites. Features and benefits include:
- Accuracy: The system provides increased beam stability and can distinguish smaller features and finer variations in composition faster than previous generations.
- Precision: Every system is factory tested to meet the requirements of metals manufacturers and ensure that each system meets specifications for accuracy, sensitivity, and repeatability of data.
- Automation: Collection of data and generation of reports can be fully automated.
- Sample Preparation: Sample loading allows preparation of the next batch of samples while the previous batch is being analyzed.
