DMG MORI Universal Turning Machine

The ecoTurn 450 universal turning machine is part of DMG MORI’s ECOLINE series of machining centers. It was recently redesigned for improved accessibility.
The safety windows can be removed and replaced from the outside and an internal chip protection system is designed to prevent damage to the windows.
The ecoTurn 450 has a footprint as small as 5.8 m2, a maximum cutting diameter of 400 mm and a maximum turning length of 568 mm.
Other notable features include:
- A belt-driven spindle with a maximum toque of 370 Nm
- A X-/Z-axis traverse rate of 30 m/min
- 80-mm standard bar capacity
- VDI servo turret with up to 12 tools
- 3D control technology with DMG MORI’s SLIMline Panel

Fonon Fiber Laser Cutter

Fonon Corporation has unveiled the newest addition to its line of industrial mid-size CNC laser metal cutting, marking and engraving systems: the SBM-1200FL.Â
Available standard with Fonon’s advanced laser technology, the SBM-1200FL is offered in a wide range of customizable laser wattages, up to 1 kW—all in a four-by-four form factor.Â
It eliminates external mirrors and delicate equipment by delivering the laser via progressive fiber optics, which enable the beam to achieve cutting speeds of three to four times that of other cutting systems of comparable wattage.
The SBM-1200FL can process a wide range of industrial materials and is particularly effective at cutting highly-reflective metals, including:
- Aluminum
- Copper
- Brass
- Titanium
- Stainless steel
- Nickel
- Bronze
Programmable by any machinist in native G-code, the SBM-1200FL is driven by a PC-based CNC closed-loop motion control unit.
As with other recent releases in Fonon’s Laser Photonics family, the SBM-1200FL is equipped standard with Direct Drive Motion System technology. A magnetic, linear drive system effectively levitates the cutting head smoothly and quickly across the working surface area.
Fonon’s laser cutting technology is scheduled to be included as optional equipment in all cutting, marking and engraving products available under the Laser Photonics brand during Q2 2016.
The SBM-1200FL is available now.

Mazak CNC

Mazak’s MAZATROL SmoothX is designed to ensure the shortest possible machining cycle times, especially in fine increment programs for simultaneous 5-axis operations and free-form die-mold machining.
The new control incorporates a wide variety of advanced programming functions, including:
- Super High-Speed Mode helps provide maximum interpolation capabilities
- High Gain Feed Forward Control boosts machining speed and accuracy
- Fast Rotary Axis Speeds optimize gear skiving and rotary axis threading
- Variable Acceleration Control calculates optimal acceleration for a combination of axes
- Intelligent Pocket Milling engages a high-efficiency toolpath when milling part cavities
- Smooth Corner Control makes cutter path adjustments to help shorten cycle times
- Orbit Machining allows a machining center with a C-axis to turn complex features on parts
- Position Controlled Hobbing provides fast, convenient hobbing and skiving operations
- Real Time Tuning ensures optimal machining balance as workpiece weight changes
The control’s 19″ display presents all of the critical machine data within a single page view, while the tilt control panel allows for optimum positioning based on operator height.
A multi-touch screen, similar to that of a smartphone, enables fast and smooth programming operations. In addition, an SD card allows the CNC to store up to 32GB of data.
The SmoothX is compatible with the following Mazak machines:
- INTEGREX i-Series
- INTEGREX e-H Series
- INTEGREX i-V Series
- INTEGREX e-V Series
- VORTEX i-V Series
- VARIAXIS i-Series
- VARIAXIS j-5X Series
- VERSATECH Series
Mazak Canada will be demonstrating the CNC on its INTEGREX i-200 multi-tasking machine and VERTICAL CENTER UNIVERSAL (VCU) 500A 5X machining center at the Montreal Manufacturing Technology Show, May 16-18.
