Engineering.com wants you to share your story to inspire others.

From Elizabeth Baron to Steven M. Levine, engineers have had a great impact on the world around us. Many start-up companies and professionals who contribute to the greater good often go unrecognized—until now.
Engineering.com is asking the engineering community to submit their nominations or stories about engineers who are inspiring others to go beyond the mundane tasks and work to build a better future. In a new initiative called “The Future of Engineering: Share Your Story,” our team is asking engineers to motivate others like them through their words.
Engineers worldwide are inventing technologies that are changing the way we live. Since the beginning of time, professionals across this industry have reinvented the modern world. Through technological advancements, our world has changed from dark and stationary to a global community through inventions such as the airplane, the Internet, electricity, telecommunications and so much more.
Just in the past few years, we have seen many great inventors. In cooperation with the Delft University of Technology and the Dutch Foundation for Applied Water Research, Mark Van Loosdrecht created the Nereda process for wastewater treatment. The revolutionary process uses microbial action to transform pollutants into waste products using activated sludge, reducing the use of energy and land requirements. Similarly, the University of Colorado’s Assistant Professor Wil Srubar and his fellow researchers produced a new brick from Synechococcus, a green microorganism that absorbs carbon and produces calcium carbonate. The new bio-brick may be the answer to improving the efficiency and sustainability of construction. Additionally, Andrew Slorance, who endured years of challenges using his own wheelchair, manufactured a new smart wheelchair that is made from a carbon fiber frame and weighs only a little over five pounds. Using artificial intelligence, Slorance’s chair enables wheelchair users to automatically adjust the center of gravity based on the terrain, increase stability, and add on to the design according to their needs. One thing these three engineers have in common with countless others: their global mission to make a difference.
Even, during these unprecedented times, engineers have been behind much of what is keeping the world safe—masks, ventilators, UV sanitizing equipment, and air purifiers. We simply cannot manage without current and future inventions. Our generation is seeing inventors who can be the next Francis H. Richards or Leonard Forbes.
Engineers may not be the best storytellers, but together they can influence the next generation. Now more than ever, the world wants to share positivity by uplifting and empowering others, and we believe it can be done through communication.
Engineering.com is asking for your help. Our new content submission program provides a channel for engineers to showcase some of their great charity work and celebrate engineering developments that the industry is proud of. These articles will be published on engineering.com. Though these engineers will not be paid for their articles, their work is guaranteed to have vast exposure as the platform reaches millions of professionals.
Whether you or someone you know has founded the next big start-up, invented a new way to manage the climate crisis, or is helping people across the world, please let us know by visiting our The Future of Engineering: Share Your Story page.
