Stratasys to Buy MakerBot?

Last week we reported that MakerBot had entered into acquisition talks. At the time we didn’t have any specifics about who was look to buy the 3D printing stratup. Well, according to TechCrunch, Stratasys is in talks to buy MakerBot.

Stratasys’ move to acquire MakerBot makes perfect sense. Late last year the company acquired Israeli 3D printer manufacturer Objet and solidified their industrial quality 3D printing offering. However, Stratasys has yet to create a machine for the Maker market.  The acquisition of MakerBot brand would solve that problem overnight.

Since 2009 MakerBot has produced 20,000 3D printers and this year MakerBot’s expects to generate revenue close to $50M.

Later this week MakerBot will open its first factory – a 50,000 sq. ft space located in Brooklyn.
