The partnership will help Sigfox to scale its cloud infrastructure and add more IoT services.

Sigfox, a leader in Internet of Things (IoT) platform services, announced that it has partnered with Google Cloud to scale its cloud infrastructure and extend its IoT services portfolio. Every month, Sigfox processes billions of messages from objects connected to the Internet. The partnership with Google cloud will allow the company to accelerate its IoT agenda.
Sigfox is well known for its 0G network. Such networks are low-cost, low-powered wireless networks that allow IoT devices to send small messages. The company has already deployed its 0G network in 72 countries and provides coverage to more than 1.3 billion people.
Over the past several years, Sigfox has seen an increase in the number of devices connected to its network. IoT devices have a wide range of uses, including tracking shipping containers, monitoring fire hydrants, securing buildings, and monitoring irrigation levels. This explosion in IoT devices means that Sigfox needs to scale its IoT network to accommodate billions of messages a month. In 2020 alone, Sigfox saw a 145 percent increase in the number of objects connected to its network.
Moving into 2021, Sigfox is anticipating that IoT will play a bigger role in office spaces. IoT devices can help people establish a new normal while protecting the safety of employees returning on-site to work. IoT devices can assist businesses with contact tracing, monitoring occupancy, and social distancing by tracking employee locations throughout the workday. The technology could also alert cleaning staff when areas of buildings are empty of staff and can be cleaned and sanitized.
IoT devices have the potential to empower businesses to prioritize employee health like never before. Real-time data can help employers implement practices to maintain social distancing measures and make informed decisions about sanitation, contact tracing and social distancing. But these new devices will need the support of a 0G network.
The partnership with Google Cloud allows Sigfox to improve its network by increasing the reliability, compliance and security of its platform. Google Cloud also offers other value-added services for 0G ultra-low cost networks, such as improved connectivity and geolocation.
“We chose Google Cloud because we share the same appetite for driving digital transformation through helpful, reliable, and sustainable innovation,” said Franck Siegel, deputy chief executive officer at Sigfox. “With this partnership, Google Cloud technology will support us in becoming the global leader in ultra-low-cost, ultra-low-power asset visibility and tracking.”
This shift to the cloud will transform the use of IoT devices in many industries. Sigfox smart trackers will be able to give companies exact location information about items, including information about whether an item has moved and its condition. This has applications within the auto parts and utility industries, to name a few. Further, Cloud services will enable scalable services that can handle exponential data growth.
“Google Cloud is proud to support Sigfox and provide an IoT leader with more reliability and flexibility as the company takes on the next steps of its development,” said Samuel Bonamigo, vice president of Sales, EMEA South, Google Cloud. “Sigfox’s use of Google Cloud technology is the perfect illustration of how we’re helping innovative companies grow and thrive, and better serve their customers.”
