Sciaky, Inc., a subsidiary of Phillips Service Industries (PSI) and providers of large-scale additive manufacturing (AM) solutions, announced that it will be a presenting sponsor at the Institute for Defense and Government Advancement (IDGA) Additive Manufacturing for Government Conference scheduled for December 10-11, 2013 at the Washington Plaza in Washington, DC.
With President Obama’s recent creation of the National Network of Manufacturing Innovation, which includes $1 billion in funding for FY 2014, the conference will highlight the challenges and opportunities for additive manufacturing in a government and defense context. The event will also cover the current state of advanced manufacturing, the development of new AM materials, the latest in 3D and 4D printing, as well as implications for the DoD when procuring AM solutions. Some of the speakers include Ed Morris, director at the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute (NAMII; a.k.a. America Makes), Dr. Robert Ivester, acting director, EERE Advanced Manufacturing Office at the Department of Energy, Elana Broitman, principal deputy to the DAS/D, Manufacturing & Industrial Base Policy at the Department of Defense, and Michael Maher, program manager, Open Manufacturing at DARPA.
Sciaky’s new additive manufacturing process, which is marketed as Electron Beam Direct Manufacturing (EBDM), combines computer-aided design (CAD), electron beam welding technology and layer-additive processing. To date, it is the only large-scale, fully programmable means of achieving near-net shape parts made of high-value metals, such as titanium, tantalum and inconel. The company’s AM process has a standard build envelope of 19 ft x 4 ft x 4 ft (L x W x H), allowing manufacturers to produce very large parts and structures.
