Sci-fi Concept Becomes Movie Prop reality in Less Than 2 Weeks

3D printing, film, movie, prop, entertainmentWhat do you do when you need a highly detailed and fully functional 3D printed movie prop in a hurry? You look for experts in 3D printing and additive manufacturing, of course.

The 3D printing and digital manufacturing experts at FATHOM were contacted with a unique project last year. They were asked to create a complicated prop with a short lead-time for a major motion picture being filmed – The Zero Theorem. The prop not only had to look like a futuristic device, but function like one.

The Zero Theorem, which opens in theaters nationwide on September 19, is about a computer hacker whose goal is to discover the reason for human existence. It is the latest movie from acclaimed director Terry Gilliam (Brazil, Twelve Monkeys, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas) and features an all-star cast including Christoph Waltz, Matt Damon and Tilda Swinton.

By using GrabCAD Workbench to manage and collaborate on design files, FATHOM successfully 3D printed a functional, futuristic, interactive gadget that is used by characters in the film. The case/controller houses a Samsung Galaxy tablet in such a way that movable tabs and buttons activate the touch screen to trigger various lights and graphics.

“Using a robust tool like GrabCAD Workbench for such a fast paced project was key to achieving successful results,” said Tony Slavik, Production Manager at FATHOM. He added “Terry Gilliam is a visionary director and it’s great that FATHOM’s digital manufacturing expertise was a part of this innovative project.
