Don’t risk custom simulation software with ad hoc Cloud setups.
Rescale has announced the Rescale Software Publisher, which enables engineers to run custom, in-house simulation software on a secure public cloud.

The San Francisco-based engineering-grade HPC as-a-service company aims to enable engineers to run thousands of commercial and open-sourced engineering applications from the portfolios of Ansys, Siemens, COMSOL, Dassault Systèmes and more. The idea is to boost an engineering team’s computational resources temporarily whenever they need to run intense engineering calculations. It’s particularly useful for small to medium enterprises that can’t afford on-premise HPC resources, or any business that’s looking to boost its current resources for a short run of intensive computations.
Unfortunately, this didn’t help the countless engineering teams running bespoke, in-house simulation software. Engineering organizations typically develop and run in-house made simulation tools for research or to protect their intellectual property. Traditionally, these tools would need to be run on the available on-premise resources or by using complex ad hoc cloud deployments. The latter could run the risk of improper security and compliance adherence.
Rescale Software Publisher was introduced to streamline these custom cloud deployments while maintaining an organization’s processes and security systems.
“The simulation software portfolios used by engineering-driven companies are a source of competitive advantage and often include proprietary models,” explains Edward Hsu, chief product officer at Rescale. “Operating a fast-changing R&D software catalog across dynamic cloud environments can be difficult for IT teams. Rescale Software Publisher helps our customers and partners empower their R&D organizations to run any software they need at will, optimized for performance, all while adhering to IT-defined policies around data locality, security and compliance.”
According to Rescale, the Software Publisher also provides:
- Consistent software installs images to streamline, reuse and recreate cloud instances
- Pre-configured sandbox environments to test, validate build and run in-house software
- License management tools to run existing commercial software
Software produced on the Software Publisher will have all the benefits and abilities of other tools available to run on Rescale’s HPC platform. Organizations can therefore enforce all their IT, security, compliance and user controls policies and access applications on the platform when authorized. They can then run those applications on consistent, portable and high-performance computing environments.
“Thanks to Rescale’s cloud platform, we were already able to run fire simulations more efficiently than ever before using the open-source Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS),” says Dr. Susanne Kilian, scientific head of numerical simulation at hhpberlin. “With Rescale Software Publisher, we can now also bring our in-house and custom visualization software to the cloud, which will be another booster for our engineering capabilities. In this way, Rescale will enable any of our engineers to leverage their analysis insights and hhpberlin’s unique simulation approach with any application of their choice. The ability to self-publish software on the Rescale platform will enable us to perform a wide range of analysis and post-processing faster and more efficiently to fulfill our mission of making cities safer, more sustainable and more livable.”
