The Aerospace Division of Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (IHI), a leading manufacturer of jet engines, has selected MSC.Software’s multi-discipline analysis solver MD Nastran to perform rotor dynamics analysis for the development of jet engines.
When creating jet engines, improvements in safety and reliability should be combined with noise and emission reductions. MD Nastran helps streamline the analysis of fuselage-engine integration during development. The program’s rotor dynamics feature can simulate vibrations specific to body of rotation and engine vibration.
“It is a huge advantage for us that MD Nastran includes a rotor dynamics feature as this is crucial for aircraft manufacturers,” said Masaharu Shinozaki, general manager of the structure and heat transfer technology group at IHI Aerospace Division.
MD Nastran Rotor Dynamics is a cooperative effort between NASA, Boeing, major Boeing partners and major aircraft manufactures, and MSC.Software. The effort should assist collaboration between jet engine and airframe manufacturers. “When you look at the requirements of a rotor dynamics code, such as blade out simulation, there are no other codes in the world that can perform this combination of analysis,” said Dr. Charles Lawrence, structural engineer, Structures and Acoustics Division, Glenn Research Center at Lewis Field, NASA. “These models are incredibly large – millions of degrees of freedom. MD Nastran can take these large models and abstract them to smaller models and still produce accurate results.”
“With a fully integrated linear and nonlinear solution MD Nastran can simulate short-duration explicit events such as bird-strike and blade-out with rotor dynamic simulations. It can simulate Propulsion System dynamics behavior such as rotor unbalance and other critical conditions,” said Reza Sadeghi Vice president of Product Development for MSC Software.
Propulsion system design is a collaborative process, requiring model and
results accuracy. Propulsion system and airframe manufacturers had been using home-grown codes coupled with Nastran, which required significant effort to compare simulation results from different models. MD Nastran Rotor Dynamics reduces the time-to-solution for multidiscipline applications.
