Reverse Engineering & Formula 1: Preserving Digital Geometry of a Rare Race Car Part

Digitally preserving unique geometry allows race team to push the limits.

Historically, reverse engineering has been a painstaking process of translating measurements of objects in 3D space onto an orthographic drawing. Today, 3D metrology using laser scanning enables companies such as Dimensional Engineering to quickly and accurately generate digital geometry for a complex physical part.

In this case, Dimensional Engineering used a FAROArm portable scan arm to scan a rare gearbox component from a vintage formula 1 racecar. This part, shown in the video, is one of two remaining parts in the world—the other one is on the car.

By digitizing the geometry of this critical, high-value part, the vintage racing team is able to push the car to the limit on the track, while still preserving the rare components.
