Emmanuel Cofie is a simulation analyst with an interesting challenge.  As set out in this white paper, validating thermal distortion models for non-terrestrial environments can be tricky.

Cofie is in charge of thermal distortion analysis of the Integrated Science Instrument Module on the James Webb Space Telescope. It is his job to ensure the structure can withstand the temperature transition from earth to the near vacuum and cryogenics of space.

In his American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics journal paper, Cofie goes into more detail about:

  • Validation Tests
  • Thermal Distortion Modeling
  • Modeling Uncertainty Factors
  • Model Validation Results
  • And more
