Simulating Thermal Dissipation in a Toyota Prius

In this white paper, engineers from Toyota discuss how they tested the thermal dissipation of insulated-gate bipolar transistors IGBTs in the Prius-C using transient thermal characterization systems.

To charge hybrid vehicle batteries, the alternating current generated by the braking power or the combustion engine must be converted into direct current. This process, performed by (IGBTs) and other components, creates a considerable amount of heat.

By using simulation, Toyota was able to avoid more costly and time consuming analytic steps involving physical prototypes and thermal cameras.
