Renewed Trimble/Nucor Agreement Takes Things a Step Further

The Trimble/Nucor collaboration adds a joint educational program into the mix.

On September 10, 2015, Trimble and Nucor announced that they would continue their multi-year collaboration in the AEC industry. This is the third agreement between Trimble and Nucor since their partnership began in 2009.

Trimble is mostly known for its projects in civil engineering and surveying. However, with a number of acquisitions, Trimble has become competitive in a wide range of fields. With acquisitions such as SketchUp and Tekla, Trimble is able to contend with industry leaders in AEC, BIM and structural steel software from companies such as Autodesk, Bentley and Nemetschek.

Nucor is the largest steel producer in the U.S. It has incorporated Trimble’s Tekla Structures BIM software into several of its business divisions. Nucor’s Vulcraft/Verco Group, which supplies steel decking, also intends to standardize on Tekla Structures across its entire in-house detailing process. Nucor hopes that the expanded use of Tekla Structures will further improve their manufacturing workflow.

The collaboration agreement isn’t just a matter of Nucor using Trimble’s software. Both Trimble and Nucor will also be working on educational initiatives. Efforts will focus on training and educational institutions near Nucor’s many fabrication facilities.

Trimble and Nucor seek to educate AEC stakeholders on effective workflows that carry projects from design to fabrication and construction. Workshops will also target students and prepare them with the skills they need to enter an increasingly BIM-centric construction industry. Joint training and workshops for both students and those in the industry will also be expanded.
