Rapid Custom Manufacturing Produces Spine Implants

AlloSource, one of the nation’s largest non-profit bone and tissue providers, uses an assembly line of MDX-540s desktop milling machines from Roland to quickly produce parts used in spine fusion surgeries. Said Thomas A. Cycyota, AlloSource president and CEO, “The machines give us a seamless workflow and flawless results, and are resistant to extensive sanitization, which is a vital part of our process.”

From prototype to final production, this Rapid Custom Manufacturing (RCM) equipment makes it possible to quickly produce parts that are a custom fit for each patient. The equipment is a major improvement over current clinical processes, such as mass-producing one-size-fits-all parts or hand sculpting unique parts.

The MDX series milling machines produce detailed parts with smooth surface finishes and tight tolerances. They handle a variety of materials including aluminum and plastics. The machines include CAM software, for a seamless workflow with all major 3D CAD applications.
