PTC has been at the forefront of this new age of connected devices since day one with its ThingWorx Internet of Things (IoT) technology platform. At its annual LiveWorx event, PTC announced the expansion of the platform, which will now deliver comprehensively distributed, real-time edge computing capabilities specifically designed for demanding industrial use cases.
The new edge computing capability is made possible through a pre-integrated “solution stack” that is able to collect and aggregate millions of points of data from sensors. The solution stack can also perform automated machine learning and predictive analytics. This will further enable digital product development and support augmented reality (AR) experiences. With the introduction of these new capabilities, PTC now supports distributed, hybrid deployments both at the edge and in the cloud.
Previously, some organizations with IoT ecosystems have run into problems with traditional architectural approaches for IoT computing—particularly due to the inability to handle the volume, variety and velocity of data on their networks.
By offering a platform for comprehensive IoT computing at the edge, PTC helps remove reliance on the cloud and allows for analytics and knowledge generation to occur at the source of the data or the connected device itself.
“Enterprises of all sizes and in all IoT-related industries cannot afford unplanned downtime that disrupts operations due to a lack of insight about how their devices are working,” said Jim Heppelmann, president and CEO of PTC. “By introducing real-time edge computing capabilities, PTC is enabling IoT solution builders with incredible flexibility in architecting IoT deployments. In turn, solution builders bring efficiency, speed, cost control and security to the IoT solutions that they develop for their customers.”
Currently, PTC is working with industry leaders including Hewlett Packard Enterprises and National Instruments to optimize the performance of the PTC technology platform, including a tool that streamlines the creation of augmented reality and virtual reality experiences tuned for IoT use cases.
“PTC is a leading player in the industrial IoT data analytics market, including services for the extremely important predictive and prescriptive analytics,” said Dan Shey, managing director and vice president of B2B at ABI Research. “Its new real-time edge analytics offering will add to its already stellar IoT portfolio and provide any enterprise with a holistic set of analytics services, from the edge to the cloud.”
