Production Technology at IMTS: Tool Holders, Fixture Plates and More

A quick peak at showcases from Emuge, Jargons and Modern Industries.

Emuge SPEEDSYNCHRO Tool Holder

Among Emuge Corp.’s full range of cutting tools and workholding solutions at IMTS 2016, Emuge will feature the Emuge SPEEDSYNCHRO, a unique tool holding solution.

The Emuge SPEEDSYNCHRO tool holder features an integrated transmission of 1:4.412 for optimizing thread production on CNC machines with synchronous spindles. The integrated transmission is combined with Softsynchro minimum-length compensation to efficiently work with high cutting speeds and a relatively low synchronous machine tool speed, compensating for synchronization errors during the threading process.  The results are significant time and money savings, particularly in high production tapping operations.

The new tool holder offers easy programming and up to 40 percent time savings, due to significantly shortened thread production cycles resulting from the combined fast acceleration and cutting speeds facilitated by the integrated transmission.

The time savings substantially increases the number of tapped holes achieved in a given operation and is especially effective in high production tapping. Tool life and thread surface quality are both optimized.

Exact thread depths can be achieved with SPEEDSYNCHRO as it does not reverse the direction of rotation.

Emuge SPEEDSYNCHRO Tool Holder supports a maximum spindle speed of 2,000 RPM and a maximum tapping speed of 8,824 RPM.

Cutting range is from M1 – M8 and an ER16 tool holder size is offered.  Internal coolant capability is provided.

New QLS Fixture Plate from Jergens

Jergens Inc. will demonstrate their new QLS (Quick Locating System) Fixture Plate designed for use with the company’s popular Ball-Lock quick-change system at IMTS 2016. With the connection to Ball-Lock, the new QLS allows users to add the whole range of the Fixture-Pro system.

“The ability to use the Fixture-Pro range greatly extends the machining envelope on five axis machines”, says Steve Schmidtke, Group Manager for Jergens Workholding Solutions Group. “The modular workholding of Fixture-Pro combined with the quick and accurate location of Ball-Lock provides a multiplying effect on productivity”, Schmidtke continues.

The concept has been designed to offer users a system that could be changed over – even between machines – in just seconds. Ball-Lock sub plates mount directly to the machine table and provide the connection to the new QLS system, which in turn connects to virtually any combination of Fixture-Pro risers, adapters and top tooling.

SpinSelect Multi-Pocket Selectable Tool Holder from Modern Industries

Modern Industries Spin-Select tool was created to increase productivity and consistency by decreasing downtime associated with tool and insert setups and changeovers.

SpinSelect’s patented design allows for quick indexing between its five pockets with a simple ¼ turn of a socket head cap screw. Each pocket can house a different tool, allowing for quick changes between operations without having to requalify the tools. The pockets are 30 percent stronger than traditional shank tools, allowing more rigid tools to be loaded.

Designed for use on most lathes having a turret or tool post, SpinSelect offers better throughput on machining tasks such as heavy roughing, harder material removal, and short runs.

Machining operators have seen up to an 85 percent savings on changeover/setup times as SpinSelect creates a nearly continuous runtime with offline insert changes/reloading.

Features and Benefits of SpinSelect Tool Holder:

  • Increased tool capacity – Five different inserts on one turret location
  • Reduce insert Index time by up to 85 percent
  • Change inserts and stage off-line
  • Reduced set-up time
  • No need to re-qualify tools
  • Through the tool coolant
  • Machined from wrought bar stock – no castings or powdered metal parts
  • 100 percent Made in USA
