Twelve engineering student teams, participating in various SAE competitions, recently received donations of portable 3D measurement equipment. This equipment will help the students bring manufactured 3D models into their CAD/CAE software.
The portable 3D scanners will offer the teams advanced measurement capabilities. By digitizing existing parts teams can improve design quality, validate manufacturing methods and perform finite element analyses.
The teams are being sponsored by Creaform through the company’s Student Project Sponsorship Program. This program aims to support the development of engineering students by providing them with access to Creaform’s latest technologies.
In this case, the program involves a loan of the company’s metrology-grade 3D scanning equipment, the HandySCAN 3D.
The sponsorship program received more than 85 applications from over 100 teams around the world.
The selected teams are from over eight different countries and are participating in a diverse array of competitions such as Aero Design, Clean Snowmobile, Formula (Hybrid, Electric), Baja and Supermileage, among other projects.
The sponsorship package includes:
- HandySCAN 700 equipment, Creaform’s metrology-grade 3D scanner
- VXmodel and VXinspect, a reverse-engineering and dimensional inspection software module
- Technical Support assistance from Creaform’s worldwide customer support team
- Training from Creaform experts offering tips to make the best use of Creaform’s 3D scanners and software solutions.
Teams will also be paired with an experienced application engineer from Creaform, who will act as a mentor and provide advice and practical knowledge.
“As a former mechanical engineering student, I am extremely proud to be offering the next generation of engineers the unique opportunity to experience the performance of professional-grade tools,” said François Leclerc, product manager and head of Creaform’s educational program. “Not everyone gets to experience such high-level technology first hand, even when working in the industry.”
