NEi Software, a Nastran developer, presented a technical paper on modal selection technique for component mode synthesis at the Shock and Vibration Symposium in October 2008. The presentation focused on an enhanced methodology for performing dynamic analysis of very large FEA models measured in multi-million degrees of freedom. NEi Software conducted several tutorials on new features in its simulation software, as well as demonstrated new technology that enhances nonlinear analysis in Nastran making it faster, easier, and closer to real world phenomena, such as true surface-to-surface contact and automated contact generation tools. The NEi Composites tutorial demonstrated Progressive Ply Failure Analysis (PPFA), an NEi Software tool that examines the residual strength after first ply failure in a laminate structure that allows engineers to mitigate catastrophic failure modes in parts optimized for strength-to-weight criteria. A comprehensive session on the Dynamic Design Analysis Method (DDAM) explained the steps in determining the dynamic response of a structure to shock loading. Using DDAM, users determined the effects of underwater explosions from sources such as depth charges, mines, missiles, and torpedoes.
Topics covered at the Shock and Vibration Symposium included shock testing, weapons effects, air blasts, ground shocks, water shock, cratering, penetration, shock physics, earthquake engineering, structural dynamics, shock and vibration instrumentation, and experiment techniques. More than 200 papers were presented. Panel discussions addressed topics such as new softwaredevelopments and accelerometer isolation problems.
