Do we really need one more cloud-based CAD data sharing app? I wouldn't think so, but the mystical market forces say otherwise. MyCadbox v1.0 has been released from beta earlier this week to rave reviews from the tech community.
Another cloud-based CAD data sharing app? I was skeptical when I heard the announcement. Does the market really need one more competitor in this space? What makes this application unique?
Without going into a full review, I must admit that I am pleasantly surprised. CadFaster, the Finnish company that produced MyCadbox and who have been around the CAD collaboration scene for much longer, has found a niche in the CAD sharing marketplace.
Avoiding the browser, MyCadbox uses a local client available for Windows (PC) and iOS (iPad). The drag-and-drop ease makes sharing a breeze and the client processes large models faster than a browser-based viewer. The free version is limited to 10 “live” shared files at a time. Subscribing to the Pro version for $9.99/mo increases that limit and provides additional benefits.
Although not yet supported on Android devices, MyCadbox has value if you don’t own an iOS device. You still get sharing between Windows-based PCs and laptops, maybe even a Microsoft Surface. Additionally, since MyCadbox opens STEP and IGES files, you can use it as a free neutral file viewer. It won’t check geometry or topology, but you can at least have a quick glance at the accuracy of your exported data before sending it to a customer or vendor. Have them install MyCadbox, and you can collaborate on the project instead of throwing the data over the wall.
