Mimics software by Materialise is well-known as a leader in visualization and segmentation of CT/MRI data in the bioengineering field. Now, however, Mimics is moving to the mainstream as the benefits of patient specific care become more prominent and Materialise’s role more apparent.
When a car breaks down, you can pop the hood, diagnose the problem and determine how to fix it. Because of the inaccessibility of the human body, when a patient has a medical issue, it’s not that simple. The Mimics Innovation Suite makes it possible to go from CT/MRI data to 3D, revealing the internal human anatomy in a non-invasive way. Through the link to RP, FEA, CFD, and CAD, the potential for patient specific device designs is unleashed.
Nearly all major implant manufacturers are using the Mimics Innovation Suite to design custom implants in both the cranial facial and orthopedic markets. In addition, it has proven to be a missing link to revolutionize pulmonary and cardiac R&D.
The segment tells the story of Materialise’s rich history of driving innovation and covers a variety of ways that users are employing the Mimics Innovation Suite of software for their research and product development needs. Dr. Ola Harrysson, Associate Professor at North Carolina State University and his biomodeling students present an osseointegrated prosthetic leg that they designed for a dog named Cassidy; Dr. Robert Kung, Chief Scientific Officer of Abiomed, Inc. shows the artificial heart developed with the help of Mimics; and Dr. Jan De Backer, CEO of FluidDA reviews the R&D currently going on for respiratory medical treatments and device design.
The segment covers only a few of the ways that the Mimics Innovation Suite is providing solutions to innovate product developments that result in a better and healthier world. It will be interesting to see where 3D modeling takes us next.
