Material for metal 3D printing won’t catch on fire

Onyx FR, from Markforged, is a V-0 rated flame-retardant material for use in aerospace, automotive, and defense industries. Many traditional 3D printed plastics will burn if they catch fire, but this new material is self-extinguishing, so it will actually stop itself from burning. Other features of Onyx FR include strength, good print quality and surface finish – all while resisting fire.

Said Jon Reilly, VP of Product at Markforged, “Onyx FR opens up more applications for 3D printing across automotive, aerospace, and defense industries because it meets higher fire safety standards. When parts are reinforced with strands of continuous carbon fiber, they are as strong as aircraft-grade aluminum at half the weight.”

Onyx FR joins Markforged’s wide portfolio of industrial metal and composite materials. Eiger, Markforged’s cloud-based software platform, makes it easy for clients to design a part, choose their materials, and print from across the room or around the world.
