According to PTC, Project Lightning is positioned to change the mechanical CAD market for the next 20 years. Even though the CAD industry was very dynamic through the last decade with much technology as the parametric modeling approach became widely adopted, radical innovation on core modeling products has diminished. New CAD systems releases seemed mostly focused on user interface advancements, more automated capabilities, and specialized modules. This has led to the characterization of CAD technology as “mature” and a “commodity.” A company spokesperson said that big problems remain in the area of product development.
Further, PTC notes that Project Lightning, debuting on October 28, 2010, will solve the big unsolved problems in mechanical CAD, including fundamental ease-of-use, interoperability, and assembly management. The software offers a scalable, interoperable, easy-to-use set of mechanical design applications that are compatible with Pro/E, CoCreate, ProductView, and Windchill.
The company reports that Project Lightning can help transition companies from 2D design to 3D modeling methods. It is reported that the product can open opportunities with manufacturers to get 2D users to use 3D design tools for manufacturing planning.
