LIDA 400 Series Linear Encoder Receives Redesign

Redesigned series are interchangeable with older generations with new and improved features.

Heidenhain Corporation released the LIDA 400 series linear encoder in 2000 for coordinate measuring machines, linear motion stages and applications like wafer inspection, waterjet cutting and a long list of others.

HEIDENHAIN introduces the next generation fully redesigned LIDA 400 series with several benefits and features.

With advancements in technology, Heidenhain recently introduced their fully redesigned LIDA 400 series with several new benefits and features.

The new LIDA 400 series is mechanically compatible with the previous LIDA 400 family. Scanning units are interchangeable with older graduations. Still maintaining a 20-micron graduation and interpolation available up to 100 times from the scanning unit, the exposed encoder system can have a resolution of up to(?) 50 nanometers and accuracies to +/- one micron. The signal quality is also improved in this redesign.

A new multi-colored status LED on the side of the scanning unit indicates signal levels during installation, which can be used as a quick status check of the encoder to determine functionality.

The status LED also indicates the reference mark signal quality.

For the digital TTL versions with interpolation, the interpolation circuits have been miniaturized to fit inside the scanning unit housing. This is more cost-effective compared to the extended sized connectors of previous versions.

The color of the scanning unit is now silver-colored nickel plating versus black anodized coating. Due to new electronic components, the single-field scanning principle is more robust against contamination on the scales – up to 4mm of the graduation can be blocked and the scanning unit can still generate signals within specification.

The new LIDA 400 redesigned series is available now, and a phase out of the older LIDA 400 series is planned at minimum one year from now to give customers enough time for testing and transition.

Heidenhain is the North American subsidiary of Dr. Johannes Heidenhain GmbH, an international manufacturer of precision measurement and control equipment.  The company’s product line includes linear scales, rotary and angular encoders, digital readouts, digital length gages, CNC controls and machine inspection equipment.
