Lenovo announced new additions to its ThinkPad laptop lineup on Monday at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2022, the telecommunications tradeshow which began yesterday in Barcelona.

The new computers include the ThinkPad P16s Gen 1, ThinkPad P14s Gen 3, ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 5, ThinkPad T16, ThinkPad T14s Gen 3, and ThinkPad T14 Gen 3. Lenovo also unveiled a new mobile monitor, the ThinkVision M14d.

Of the new ThinkPads, the P16s Gen 1 and P14s Gen 3 are the only two included in Lenovo’s ThinkPad P series of professional mobile workstations. In a press release coinciding with the MWC announcement, Lenovo describes these two new laptops as its “most mobile workstations.”

The ThinkPad P16s Gen 1 is a new entry in the ThinkPad P series, with its numeral denoting a 16-inch screen size and 16:10 aspect ratio. These are the same display characteristics as the Lenovo P1 Gen 4, which was announced in June of last year. Lenovo has high confidence in the appeal of the 16-inch, 16:10 display as middle ground between the industry-standard 15- and 17-inch size categories.

“The 16-inch is an emerging sweet spot,” said Rob Herman, Lenovo’s General Manager of the Workstation and Client AI Business Unit, in a recent interview with engineering.com. “In my own personal experience… boy, that 16-inch screen. What a game changer for me. Just going from 15 to 16, there’s a noticeable difference to that 16:10 format, and I can imagine over time that customers would migrate from 17 to 16.”

The new ThinkPad P16s is equipped with 12th-gen Intel Core processors, configurable up to an i7 P-series with 14 cores, and an NVIDIA T550 graphics card. It has a max memory of 48GB (DDR4, 3200MHz) and a max storage of 2TB (NVMe PCIe Gen4 SSD). It offers two battery variants, 52.5Wh or 86Wh.

The ThinkPad P14s Gen 3 is the latest update to the P14s, the entry point of the ThinkPad P series. The 14-inch display of the P14s has been upgraded from the former 16:9 aspect ratio to the taller 16:10. The P14s also features a wider touchpad than its predecessor and an upgraded 1080p webcam.

The P14s Gen 3 offers the same processor specs as the new P16s, up to a 12th-gen Intel Core i7 CPU and NVIDIA T550 graphics, as well as the same max 48GB memory and 2TB storage. It offers two battery variants, 39.3Wh or 52.5Wh.
