Lighting giant Philips has partnered with carpet manufacturer Desso to create the world first LED embedded carpet.
Designed as a tool for embedding information into the very ground we walk on the as of yet unnamed carpet product could revolutionize interior and information design.
Because the Philips/Desso collaboration is still in the early prototype stages details about the project are sparse. However, we do know that the new carpet technology will feature a layer of LEDs embedded beneath a light transmissive pile. When the LEDs are switched on any variety of color, figure, or message can be shown through the carpet.
Currently Philips and Desso have designed their carpet to be used as an emergency guidance system in buildings, a de-cluttering mechanism for information-saturated areas like airports and of course as an interior design tool.
Given the ubiquity of carpet, and the flexibility of LED embedded carpet, we’re sure even more interesting ideas will come flooding from deisgn houses and architecture firms as soon as the product is released in 2014.
