Throughout 2018, additive-manufacturing vendors introduced a number of enhancements that make these systems faster at producing parts. And you can expect this trend to continue through 2019. Staying on top of this innovative, fast moving technology can be a challenge. In a few weeks, though, you will have a chance to learn more about these developments at the annual Additive Manufacturing Users Group Conference, which will be held in Chicago, IL, at the Hilton Chicago, from May 31 through April 4, 2019.

I’ve attended this conference for a number of years and it continues to impress with the access you have to the original inventors of this technology and to expert users of these machines. This conference emphasizes learning. Attendance will increase your understanding of additive technology in ways other shows cannot. Plus, this conference gives you wonderful opportunities to really connect with your fellow users and learn and find answers to some of your most pressing problems.

Meeting and getting to know your fellow attendees during the breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and evening events are terrific resources to go in depth about this technology. You will also develop friendships and helpful connections. The AMUG Conference is a community; competition takes a back seat to spreading knowledge.

Plus, the conference is filled with sessions that cover a range of topics, such as working with metals and other materials, using AM in specific industries, and overviews of the latest software geared to easing the build of a 3D printed part, just to mention a few subjects. Speakers showcase their research in how to improve the use of various additive machines and tout discoveries that will make it easier for users to work with this technology. Workshops often involve hands-on training. Past examples taught attendees to use simulation to avoid typical casting defects, such as air entrapment, shrinkage porosity, cold shuts and mold degradation.

Then, there’s the AMUGexpo and Training Lab. This two-day event lets you see some of the technology and discuss it with sponsor vendors.

The Innovators Showcase is always a highlight of this conference. In past years, attendees have had a chance to meet and hear what drove this industry’s initial innovators Chuck Hull, Scott Crump, and Fried Vancraen to create their developments in this technology. This year it will be Professor Gideon Levy, M.SC and D.Sc., of Technology Turn Around (TTA).

The Technical Competition is a great way to see just how innovative users can be. You can examine the entries and speak with the developers. The entries display users unique applications and finishing capabilities. It’s another opportunity to pick up a few tips and techniques.
