Job Description:

HTG is seeking a highly skilled and motivated VMware RAN Engineer to join our dynamic team. As a VMware RAN Engineer, you will be responsible for the testing and validation of ORAN-based systems and solutions in our laboratory environment. Your primary focus will be on ensuring the performance, functionality, and interoperability of ORAN components and configurations. 
 
In this role, you will: 
  • Define the overall architecture and design of the ORAN laboratory infrastructure, including hardware, software, and networking components.
  • Design, plan, and execute test cases and test scenarios for ORAN systems, including baseband units (BBUs), remote radio units (RRUs), and central units (CUs).
  • Conduct functional, performance, and interoperability tests on ORAN components and interfaces.
  • Analyze test results, identify issues, and collaborate with development teams to troubleshoot and resolve issues.
  • Extensive knowledge and expertise with 5G O-RAN split functions (7-2x, RU, DU, CUCP, CUUP) and 5G call flow architecture.
  • Extensive knowledge and expertise with O-RAN software architectures in a virtual environment.
  • Extensive knowledge of software systems/services that perform virtualized ORAN activities.
  • Develop automated test scripts and tools to streamline testing processes and improve efficiency.
  • Document test procedures, results, and findings in clear and comprehensive reports.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including R&D, system integration, and product management to ensure the quality and reliability of ORAN solutions.
  • Participate in field trials and customer demos as needed to validate ORAN performance in real-world scenarios.
  • Solid understanding of networking principles, including TCP/IP, VLANs, routing, and switching
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives to enhance the effectiveness of ORAN testing methodologies and processes.
  • Thorough understanding of RF radio operations via eCPRI interfaces. Contains CSR, DU, and timing settings.
  • Thorough understanding of RAN/ORAN architecture described in 3GPP standards (Rel 15 & 16)
  • Solid understanding of networking principles, including TCP/IP, VLANs, routing, and switching
  • Knowledge of software and hardware architectures for iOS & Android devices.
  • Strong Protocol level expertise in 5G (RRC/NAS) and 4G is required.
  • Strong understanding of ORAN architecture, protocols, and interfaces, with hands-on experience in ORAN testing and validation.
  • Perform testing related to the research & functionality of an ORAN stack (i.e., performance, security, components, etc.) while adhering to ORAN standards.
  • Offer specialized assistance to laboratory testing teams to diagnose and address intricate problems with deployed RF and O-RAN test equipment.
  • Identify, investigate, and communicate issues during the testing activities including root cause analysis and enhancement identification.
  • Going through 3GPP standards, architecture, and design documents to come up with thorough and in-depth test plans for testing 5G NR functionalities.
 
Required skills and experience:
  • Proven experience 5 years in testing and validation of wireless communication systems, preferably with a focus on ORAN or similar technologies
  • 3 years of experience, encompassing end-to-end wireless/cellular system expertise including device, O-RAN, 5G core network elements (AMF, SMF, UPF, etc.), integration proficiency, and specialization in field engineering or system testing of 5G wireless/cellular systems, along with experience in cellular and/or Wi-Fi standards
  • Strong understanding of ORAN architecture, protocols, and interfaces (e.g., O-RAN Alliance specifications)
  • Hands-on experience with lab equipment such as signal generators, spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, and protocol analyzers
  • Proficiency in scripting languages such as Python, Perl, or TCL for test automation
  • Test and debug customer/ OEM deployment issues and partner with OEMs for resolution through development engineers. This will include log analysis, capturing packets via Wireshark, consisting of a robust understanding of 5G protocol stacks, chasing corner cases, and supporting customers as needed. You will work closely with development and testing teams to resolve issues. This could include modifying system designs and implementing the solution
  • Perform RAN and core network management system validation including configuration, performance, and fault management, RAN profiles and device management
 
Optional requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in information systems, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or the equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Experience with virtualization technologies (e.g., VMware, OpenStack, Docker) and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure) is highly desirable
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication and presentations skills
  • Perform validation of key features set, peak and sustained throughput & latency validation, E2E performance optimization and parameter configurations
  • Experience using QXDM or XCAL during field testing is a distinct advantage
  • CCNP certification and experience with network routers is an advantage
  • Experience with Mavenir and/or Samsung RAN environments is a distinct advantage
  • Experience using Wireshark for packet capture
