Location

The City and County of Denver supports a hybrid workplace model. Employees work where needed, at a job site several days a week and off-site as needed. Employees must work within the state of Colorado on their off-site days.

DOTI’s Project Delivery Administration (PDA) Environmental Implementation team oversees a $40 to $50 million annual capital improvement program for the Denver’s storm, sanitary, and green infrastructure programs. The team is involved in the planning, design, and construction management of these capital improvements. Planning studies may include long-range storm and sanitary master planning, outfall systems plans (OSPs), major drainageway plans (MDPs), water-focused community outreach, and program prioritization.  Projects may include large diameter storm systems, regional water quality facilities, gulch and stream reconstruction, storm water planters, trenchless and open cut sanitary design, lift station, bridge, multi-modal transportation elements, and park improvements.  For additional information on upcoming projects, please visit the 2022-2027 6-Year Water Plan.

 

The PDA Environmental Implementation team has an opening for a Senior Engineer. In this position, you will work collaboratively with teams across the planning, design, and construction groups to manage and lead infrastructure planning efforts with a focus on Denver’s storm drainage and sanitary collection system.

 

In addition, the Senior Engineer roles and responsibilities may include the following: 

  • Manage and coordinate the technical execution of wastewater-related planning studies. Studies may include storm drainage master plan updates, sanitary sewer master plan updates, lift station master plans, outfall systems plans (OSPs), major drainageway plans (MDPs), water-focused community outreach efforts, grants and project prioritization.
  • Provide technical input and guidance to support ongoing and future planning studies. Leverage and advocate best modeling practices to further enhance Denver’s sanitary sewer and storm drainage planning efforts.
  • Manage temporary and permanent flow monitoring contracts to support sanitary and storm drainage planning.
  • Prepare documentation, reports, and presentations.
  • Conduct quality assurance and quality control on deliverables, as well as perform reviews of work performed by others to ensure accuracy and completeness, standard of care, and compliance with design criteria and standard practices.
  • Engage and collaborate with other city agencies, outside governmental municipalities and regional partners, business and/or community groups, the public, and other stakeholders, as needed.
  • Coordinate alignment with internal DOTI departments and other city agencies, including DOTI Right-of-Way Services (ROWS), DOTI Wastewater Operations, Denver Parks and Recreation, and Community Planning and Development (CPD).  Partner with agencies that may include Mile High Flood District, Metro Water Recovery, Denver Water, and other governmental entities.
  • Support major design efforts in a planning capacity that may include storm, sanitary, and green infrastructure projects.
  • Serve as a technical and/or subject matter expert and provide training and mentoring to other staff members in the areas of project development, project design, project specification preparation, project management, contract management, quality control, and/or work program implementation.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

 

What You’ll Bring

  • The ideal candidate has 5 to 10 years of progressive experience in city-wide and regional storm and sanitary master planning efforts
  • Background and experience in the planning and design of storm and sanitary conveyance projects
  • Experience with highly complex, multi-discipline projects that include additional components such as roadway improvements, signal reconstruction, and bike lanes
  • Strong communication, collaboration skills and experience working with diverse groups of stakeholders and the public through community engagement
  • Ability to solve complex problems using sound professional judgment, creativity, and innovation
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office Excel and PowerPoint
  • Skilled in ArcGIS Pro/ArcMap desktop and online products
  • Skilled in H&H modeling software and techniques in CUHP/SWMM and EPA SWMM. Experience in 1D-2D integrated modeling such as FLO-2D, PC SWMM, and InfoWorks ICM is a plus.
  • Passion for water resources and the environment

 

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Education requirement: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering

  • Experience Requirement: Three (3) years of professional engineering work experience after obtaining a Professional Engineering (PE) license. (Some positions may require experience in a specific engineering area)

  • Education/Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted. Additional appropriate education may be substituted for experience requirements.

  • Licensure:

    • Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application.

    • Requires registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) by the Colorado State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers at the time of application.

    • Registration in another state will be accepted in lieu of this requirement, provided that the applicant has Colorado registration at completion of 1-year probation.

    • Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment
