Job Description:

Are you interested in working for UDRI, a national leader in scientific and engineering research, serving government, industry and nonprofit customers? We invite qualified candidates to apply for our Material Engineer opening! This is a full time benefit eligible position that offers health, dental and vision insurance, retirement, disability, tuition assistance for you and your dependents, vacation/sick accrual and holiday pay.

This position will focus on understanding the material science issues of additive manufacturing, and connecting material properties to part end-use needs. This will include planning and conducting experiments, analysis and reporting efforts related to material/process risk assessments and selection, troubleshooting, process improvement and/or material replacement, as well as structure-property and process-property relationships, and validation of part performance vs. end-use requirements. The position may include operating equipment used in experiments, as well as training student assistants in the operation of equipment used for experiments. Following applicable safety and security procedures is critical. The position will be initially focused on powder bed metal additive manufacturing technologies.

Minimum Qualifications

2. Minimum 3 years of experience in material characterization or testing (e.g., physical properties, mechanical testing, etc.) including method selection or development, data collection, and interpretation
3. Experience characterizing microstructure (e.g., grain size, morphology, porosity) using image processing software, such as ImageJ
4. Experience with Design of Experiments (DoE) and statistical analysis, to include analysis of variance (ANOVA), t-Test, and F-Test
5. Experience with material selection for aerospace applications considering mechanical property and environmental exposure considerations
6. Technical writing and verbal communication skills
7. Capability of working in a fast-paced, team environment
8. Organization skills and attention to detail

2. Experience with additive manufacturing, developing parameter sets, and applying knowledge of structure-property and process-property relationships to additive manufacturing projects
3. Experience performing process optimization, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis
4. Experience with SolidWorks or another CAD software package
5. Experience qualifying aerospace products and processes
6. Experience working within an ISO 9001/AS9100 manufacturing environment
