Job Description:

The Engineering Manager for Laser Spectroscopy Systems is responsible for designing, developing, and prototyping state-of-the-art laser spectroscopy technology. This pivotal role demands a hands-on approach to leading multidisciplinary teams, encompassing laser, electrical, mechanical, and software engineering, through the entire product lifecycle – from initial concept to manufacturing readiness. The position also involves closely collaborating with applications and technical marketing teams to develop insightful marketing materials and comprehensive application guides. This role includes mentoring and day-to-day management of some design engineers within the team. The role may require occasional domestic or international travel, not exceeding 10%.

Essential Job Functions  include the following, but are not limited to:

  • Lead the development of cutting-edge laser-based spectroscopy systems, ensuring seamless integration of various engineering disciplines.
  • Research new technologies for feasibility and applicability in product development.
  • Drive the entire product development process, from concept to manufacturing launch.
  • Oversee sustaining engineering activities, initiating and managing design improvements to enhance product performance and reliability.
  • Collaborate effectively with technical marketing and application teams to create compelling marketing and application documentation.
  • Provide mentorship and manage the day-to-day operations of design engineers within the team.
  • Ensure project timelines are met by coordinating with different disciplines during the design phase.
  • Collaborate with marketing for product release through Thorlabs’ NPI process and interface with engineering and ERP personnel.
  • Handle prototyping and testing during the design and release phases.
  • Manage the creation of preliminary build documentation, assembly instructions, Engineering Change Orders, Bills of Materials, and item creation within Thorlabs’ ERP system.
  • Provide regular reports to upper management on project status and progress.
  • Oversee the manufacturing and installation of the first few systems following each product release.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Requirements

Qualifications

 

Required Experience:

 

  • Minimum 5 years’ industry experience in designing and building laser-based instrumentation, laser systems, or laser experiments.
  • Experience in product release and product lifecycle managemen

Education:

 

  • BS (MS or higher preferred) in electrical engineering, physics or related engineering field.

 

Required Knowledge and Skills:

 

  • Strong background in optical instrument design.
  • General background in optical spectroscopy.
  • General understanding of data acquisition and digital signal processing.
  • Experience in multidisciplinary project management and engineering principles.

 

 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Knowledge of analog and digital electronics.
  • Proficiency in mechanical CAD software tools.
  • Experience with ERP software, preferably in a manufacturing or engineering context.
  • Familiarity with regulatory standards and quality assurance in laser product development.

 

Other:                                    

May require occasional domestic or international travel, not exceeding 10%.
