Position Summary

A Research Engineer at CTG is involved in the development and implementation of products and custom applications related to microwave characterization of materials and components. Engineer roles may include modeling & design, measurements, quality assurance, technical writing, research & development, and product manufacture. The Research Engineer is expected to specialize in some of these roles and be able to support all the other roles as needed. The Research Engineer is also expected to lead longer-term projects that organize other personnel and achieve milestones within a defined budget and schedule. Cooperate with and contribute to the company's Quality Management System. The successful candidate should have good attention to detail, critical thinking / problem solving abilities, and good communication skills.

Ideally, this Engineer will be a generalist and have the following desirable skills: experience/exposure to electrical or electromagnetic devices and design, machine learning, computer engineering, robotics/micro controllers, software and hardware integration, embedded systems, algorithms. Utilize critical thinking skills and respond well under pressure. Federal government contracting experience a plus.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

RESEARCH & DESIGN

Initiate, Facilitate and/or Participate in internal or contract research to support new measurement systems including sensor designs, algorithms, systems engineering, automation & robotics, human-machine interface development, etc. Utilize common software tools (e.g. Matlab/Octave, Python, Computer Aided Design, etc.) for designing components and devices.

PROTOTYPE/PRODUCT MANUFACTURE

Utilize common laboratory and production tools such as hand tools, soldering equipment, power tools, etc. As needed, construct fixtures or devices to support either research and design projects or product manufacture. 

PRODUCT/PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Lead or support manufacture of measurement system(s) for customers. Organize what is done in house or sent out for quotes. Interact with customers, prioritize & keep project schedule, coordinate cross-team efforts (e.g. software, mechanical, and electrical engineers). Visit customer sites for installation, troubleshooting, and/or new feature implementations. As needed coordinate product assembly and delivery, including tracking project progress on Jira and other company systems, coordinate & assist with quality testing.

LABORATORY MEASUREMENTS

Communicate with customers on requirements and project scope. Intake customer materials and ensure safe storage and handling.  Perform measurement actions in an accurate and timely manner, including overseeing supporting technicians.  Create internal and reportable documentation.  Maintain the project schedule communicating delays or issues, and identify process improvement opportunities.

TECHNICAL WRITING

Independently write and edit product manuals, proposals, presentations, and reports for projects and products. Coordinate with senior engineers for review

Level II: Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

Bachelor Degree in Engineering or Science.  2-4 years hands-on engineering experience

Comfortable managing the safe use of power tools for production.  Experience gathering vendor quotes (e.g. machine shop), Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Proficient with navigating computer/network file systems. and arranging virtual meetings. Specialty software proficiency (e.g. Matlab/Octave, Python, CAD, Jira, Confluence)

Electrical or Computer Engineering background, 20-30% Travel Required, Roboguide/FANUC programming is plus, PCB design and manufacturing, hands-on experience.

Level III: Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities) 

MS in Engineering or related field and 4+ years of experience or PhD in Engineering or related field and 1+ years of experience.

Advanced experience in robotics, automation, and/or artificial intelligence (AI).

Experience with leading research efforts and owning processes in the categories mentioned above.
