Job Description:

This is a full-time engineering position primarily focused on the development & production of ultrafast, (1-100GHz) opto-electronic and microwave components for use in Thorlabs line of photonic products. Thorlabs-UFO (located in Ann Arbor, MI) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Thorlabs, Inc. of Newton, NJ. This position requires someone with broad design interests that operates well in a fast-paced, start-up like environment.

 

Essential Job Functions (include, but are not limited to, the following)

  • Conceptualize and design new, ultrafast (1GHz – 100GHz) opto-electronic devices
    e.g. Detectors, receivers, amplifiers, filters, etc.
  • Prototype, develop, test & qualify new devices for use in photonics products
    This includes development of the test and qualification protocols
  • Specify, set-up and run new laboratory equipment for testing
  • Verify & test device designs with theoretical models and simulations
  • Identify, specify & procure external components; interact with vendors
  • Integrate new devices into higher level instrumentation
  • Interact with other Thorlabs BU’s for device development
  • Create & maintain documentation for the device development process
  • Create assembly and test work instructions for production; train personnel
  • Propose, negotiate & support product specifications
  • Report progress with periodic summary presentations

 

Additional Skills & Experience:

  • 5+ years of microwave device development experience
    This includes concept, design, prototyping, testing, and qualification
  • Knowledge of high frequency time & frequency domain testing to 100GHz (VNA, Spectrum Analyzer, TDR)
  • Fluent with high frequency, electronic design software (e.g. ADS, Cadence, HFSS, Comsol)
  • Experience with production of high-reliability and/or hermetic products a plus
  • Ability to design and create custom test and data collection systems (e.g. LabView)
  • Strong problem solving and design of experiment (DOE) skills
  • Must have experience with data handling and analysis (e.g. MATLAB)
  • Candidate must be detail oriented, highly organized, & able to document work
  • Candidate must have excellent written and oral communication skills

 

Education:

  • BS or MS in electronics engineering or related field
  • Training in high frequency simulation software (e.g. HFSS) is a plus
  • Any other pertinent certifications in electronics design
