Job Description:

The Chesapeake Department of Public Utilities is filling two positions at Engineer II with this advertisement. One position is located at City Hall on Cedar Road; the other is located at the Maintenance and Operations facility on Executive Boulevard.

The selected Engineer II will coordinate the design of utility improvements, manage contracts, and direct project activities. The Engineer II in this role supports the Utility’s critical mission by performing plan review, managing progress of capital projects, and other duties as assigned.
 
Qualified candidates should have the following skills:
 

 

  • Project Management – Manage projects from the budgetary stage to construction completion. Estimate costs; review plans; inspect project sites; conduct progress meetings. Communicate with customers, citizens and stakeholders. Deliver projects on time and within budget.
  • Design/Plan review –Design new water and sewer pipeline projects for expansion of the system and projects for rehabilitation of existing systems. The Engineer II must have strong fundamentals in civil engineering, with an emphasis on water resources. Coordinate design with Operations staff, regulatory agencies, other City departments. Perform hydraulic analyses for water distribution and wastewater pumping systems. Prepare budget estimates. Review legal documents; prepare engineering reports; keep detailed records.
  • Communication – Display excellent verbal and written communication. Collaborate with consultants, contractors, citizens and city staff, expressing project concepts clearly with the detail needed for effective communication. Respond to requests for information in a timely manner.
  • Critical Thinking –Resolve issues as they arise, following codes, policies, and design criteria.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT:
Requires a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a closely related field.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of two years of related, full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with the City Driving Standards.
Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) license desired.
Depending on position, State and/or City certification(s) may be required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 
Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
