The Challenge
We are looking for an experienced Engineering Technician join our Division Traffic Engineering team.
 
In this role, you will:
  • Perform traffic engineering investigations.
  • Conduct traffic counts, delay studies, speed studies and other engineering-related studies.
  • Write speed ordinances for the NC state highway system.
  • Investigate and recommend school zone ordinances.
  • Schedule sign and marking activities.
  • Prepare collision diagrams.
  • Perform accident analyses.
  • Inspect roadway modifications using MicroStation and other electronic programs.
  • Conduct onsite meetings with the public and gather information from phone requests.
  • Maintain our traffic engineering databases.
  • Coordinate and develop preliminary project quantity estimates for each project  let to contract estimate unit prices of roadway items.
  • Serve as an inspector for signs and pavement marking projects.
 
What You Bring
  • Customer service and communication experience with the public, local government officials, and NCDOT staff, including public meetings and field reviews.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively plan, schedule, and execute work assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to read, interpret, and produce engineering plans and specifications.
  • Experience applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems.
  • Knowledge of NCDOT maintenance and construction operations is preferred because this position will assist with projects of broad scope.
  • Ability to incorporate knowledge gained by use of MUTCD, AASHTO & NCDOT standard drawings & specifications to make recommendations relating to Traffic Engineering applications.
  • Computer skills using software applications to create documents, databases, and spreadsheets.
  • Ability to read, interpret and explain construction plans, contract provisions, specifications, and reports.
  • Good communication & supervisory skills to coordinate activities of junior staff.
  • Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
 
Education & Experience
  • Associate's degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or a related field, and
  • 3+ years relevant technician-level experience; or
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience.
