Job Description:

Thorlabs, Inc. is looking for a talented and motivated Mechanical Engineer II (BS plus a minimum of 5 years’ experience) with an emphasis on design for cost and design for manufacturing in a medium volume, high mix environment in high technology fields. The position will work on mechanical, opto-mechanical, and elctro-mechanical integrated systems in the fields of advanced laser systems, laser accessories, and precision electronics. The successful candidate will have strong communications skills, be comfortable within a multidisciplinary team (purchasing, technician, scientists, and other engineering disciplines), and show a passion for excellence.

Purpose of the Position

The position will be responsible for computer aided design of components and system-level assemblies as well as drafting manufacturing drawings to ANSI standards suitable for their accurate manufacture by external vendors with an emphasis on price and volume. The position will also work with the larger team to design and release new laser, laser accessory, and precision electronic products, as well as supporting our existing portfolio.

Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:

  • Design of opto-mechanical parts and assemblies for advanced integrated optical systems, in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and scientists.
  • Design of electro-mechanical housings (sheet metal, plastic injection molding and extrusions) for mid-volume manufacturing.
  • Sustaining engineering on existing product portfolio.
  • Producing mechanical drawings and other manufacturing documents for prototype and production parts, to ANSI standard where applicable.
  • Communicating with vendors, in particular machine shops, to ensure alignment around component needs, manufacturing process, drawing complexity, and pricing.
  • Entry and maintenance of components within the enterprise resource planning (ERP) software tools, including system-level bill of materials (BOMs).
  • Assembly of first articles to verify fitment, manufacturing tolerances, and assembly procedures.
  • Creating graphical artifacts to aid in generating assembly instructions, such as exploded views and step-by-step virtual assemblies.

Qualifications

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years’ in in mechanical engineering design
  • Strong skills and experience with mechanical drawing software packages, SolidWorks preferred
  • Familiarity with ANSI drawing standards
  • Experience with mechanical design for mid-volume manufacturing
  • Familiarity with engineering change request/order process
  • Machine shop experience is a plus
  • Lean manufacturing is a plus

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Equivalent Experience in similar position

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Organized approach to working on several projects simultaneously
